At Cornwall Aquatics, we’ve helped hundreds of people enjoy this incredible hobby. Here’s a beginner’s guide to tropical freshwater aquarium keeping to get you started.

Setting up your first tropical freshwater aquarium can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be. With the right fundamentals, you can create a thriving aquatic environment that’s both beautiful and healthy for your fish.
1. Choose the Right Aquarium and Equipment
Your aquarium size and style will influence everything from stocking levels to maintenance routines. Larger tanks are often easier to keep stable, especially if you’re new to fishkeeping. For this reason, we would recommend going for the largest aquarium that will best fist your space and budget.
Beginner’s Guide: Tropical Freshwater Shopping List:
- A tank sized to your space
- Quality filtration appropriate for your stock
- Aquarium heater
- Lighting suited to your setup (especially if you plan plants)
- Test kits
- Tank cleaning equipment
- Dechlorinator
- Bacteria starter
- Substrate
- Decor
- Ideally an air pump too!

Reliable supplies are available from our online shop and from our physical store, alongside expert advice.
2. Cycle Your Tank — The Essential First Step
Before adding fish, you must allow your new aquarium to cycle. Cycling means establishing beneficial bacteria that convert toxic ammonia into less harmful nitrate.
This process takes a few weeks but lays the foundation for a healthy ecosystem. We recommend adding Liquid Filter Medium for the first 4 days to get the cycle started. Feel fee to get in touch for more advice.
Remember to use dechlorinator so that any chlorine or chloramines from the tap water do not slow down the cycling period!

3. Choosing Your First Tropical Freshwater Fish
For beginners, it’s best to ask your local fish shop for hardy fish species. Always consider the adult size, temperament, and water requirements of each species. Start small and let your confidence grow. Ask our team for personalised recommendations!
