Description
HI782-25 Reagent (Nitrate HR) are test refills for the HI782 Hanna marine high range nitrate pocket checker.
Why should I measure nitrate?
Fish and invertebrates naturally make ammonia waste in your aquarium. Filter bacteria utilises ammonia waste and changes it to nitrite, then nitrate. While nitrate is not as toxic in an aquarium as ammonia or nitrite, you still need to aim for low levels for aquarium health. High levels of nitrates and phosphates can lead to algae, cyanobacteria, and dinoflagellates growth. Also, high nitrate can be detrimental to livestock health.
Test nitrate with the HI-782 digital nitrate checker. Hanna pocket checkers are an accurate and easy way to measure your aquarium water parameters. The main benefit of Hanna checkers is seeing clear on-screen digital results. Especially useful for anyone who is colourblind!
How does the HI-782 Hanna test work?
The HI-782 uses the zinc reduction method for testing. This is specifically development for use with salt/seawater, with no requirement to filter the sample before testing. In this method, the reagent creates a measurable reaction. The reaction between nitrate and the reagent causes a pink tint, which is read by the checker to provide a digital readout in parts per million.
5 Step Guide to testing with the HI782-25 Reagent (Nitrate HR)
- Press the ON/OFF button to turn the checker on. All segments will be displayed for a few seconds, followed by “Add”, “C.1” with “Press” blinking.
- Fill the cuvette with 10 ml of unreacted sample and replace the cap. Insert the cuvette into the checker and close the cap.
- Press the ON/OFF button. When the display shows “Add”, “C.2” with “Press” blinking, the checker is zeroed.
- Remove the cuvette, unscrew the cap and add the content of one sachet of Marine Nitrate High Range reagent. Replace the cap and shake vigorously for 2 minutes.
- Insert the cuvette into the checker and close the cap. Press and hold the ON/OFF button. The display will show the countdown prior to the measurement. Alternatively, wait 7 minutes and press the button. When the timer ends the checker will perform the reading. The instrument displays the nitrate concentration in ppm. The checker automatically turns off 10 minutes after reading.
Checkers vs test strips
Many aquarium owners choose test strips as an affordable way to measure key marine aquarium parameters. Testing strips can give a rough idea of nitrate, but they are not accurate. In part, this is because our colour perception can be different from one person to another! Hanna Checkers remove the guesswork required for testing, with a clear, accurate digital display in ppm.
