Description

Oase angled plant tweezers can be used in both fresh and salt water tanks. They are ideal for the accurate planting of tropical plants and as a useful tool for all aquariums.

Oase is a premium brand, and these tweezers last better than cheaper alternatives. Always rinse them in freshwater after use and dry them before storage.

How to use plant tweezers

For planting:

  • Gently take the root or base of stem with the grasp end of the tweezers
  • Insert the plant a cm or two into the plant substrate
  • Relax the grip to allow the grip end (pincers) to move away from the plant
  • Slowly take the tweezers out of the substrate, leaving the plant in place
  • Always rinse tweezers in freshwater after use and dry before storing

For most plants, it is a good idea to remove them from the bunch or pot before planting.

Bunched plants such as Egeria najas usually come with a small amount of foam around the roots just to protect the plant during transport. This foam is held around the base of the plant with either a small piece of aquarium safe lead weight or a ceramic weight. Simply remove the plant weights and you will have some loose stems that can be planted anywhere in the aquarium.

Potted plants such as Lilaeopsis novea-zealandia usually come with a small plastic basket and rockwool around the roots. Again, this is designed to hold the plant temporarily before it gets to your aquarium. Some potted plants also come with a ceramic plant weight in the pot too. Gently slide the plant basket away from the rockwool, take the ceramic weight out (if there is one). Then take the rockwool off the plant, being careful of the roots. Then plant into your substrate using plant tweezers.

Stem plant care

Stem plants are definitely easier to plant with tweezers! Cutting back stem plants with plant scissors can lead to fuller and better growth in a planted aquarium. If you notice that your stem plants are a little ‘leggy’, try cutting them at any point on the stem, then re-plant the tops amongst the existing plant bed. This can thicken growth and lead to healthier plants. Don’t forget that plants also need the right kind of lighting. Some require CO2 and all will benefit from feeding with liquid fertilisers such as Plant Food +
