Catappa Bark is for use in tropical freshwater aquariums. Especially great for planted aquariums with shrimp and tropical river fish.
Some people just have it as an ornamental sprinkle of natural decoration. However, there is much more to it than that. Recently our colleague aquarist, Mike, did a deep dive into finding out more about Catappa Bark.
I didn’t think that I’d get excited about a bit of bark, but this stuff is amazing!
He was both surprised and excited to find out how much more to this product there is…

- 100% natural product.
- Found in countries such as India, Cambodia & Srilanka.
- Fish including; Angelfish, Bettas, Cardinal Tetras, Gourami, Dward Ciclids and Pencilfish live in an environment where Catappa Bark is native.
- Promotes health and vitality in freshwater fish, plants, and shrimps.
- The Catappa Tree is a large tropical tree, also known as the Indian Almond Tree.
- This bark is packed with goodness; acting as an antibacterial, antiseptic, and astringent.
- The bark also contains humic acid, which can increase nutrient uptake for aquatic plants.
- Helps fish to maintain their mucus membrane and supports shrimp to moult.
- Promotes fish and shrimp breeding!
- Tannins are released from the bark to create ‘blackwater’ conditions, which helps to make fish feel safer in their environment.
